1. Housing Development Ministry
Living in makeshift homes in the Dominican Republic, especially in its hot and humid climate, presents significant challenges: These homes are often constructed from scraps of wood, metal, or plastic sheeting, offering little protection against the elements. These structures are not insulated, making them unbearably hot during the day and offering no relief from the tropical heat at night. They lack access to electricity, leaving families without fans or lighting to cope with the heat. Running water is often unavailable, forcing residents to rely on distant or unreliable sources for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Pests like mosquitoes and rodents thrive in these conditions, spreading diseases like dengue fever and leptospirosis. Families often live in cramped quarters, with multiple people sharing small spaces. Privacy is minimal, adding to the emotional strain of daily life. Makeshift homes are vulnerable to heavy rains and storms, common in the Dominican Republic. Flooding and leaks can damage homes and belongings, creating unsafe living conditions. In areas near landfills, like Duquesa, families are exposed to toxic fumes, pollution, and unsanitary conditions that exacerbate health risks. Residents of makeshift homes often face limited job opportunities, making it difficult to improve their living conditions. Many families live hand-to-mouth, unable to afford materials to repair or upgrade their homes. The stress of living in such conditions takes a toll on mental health, leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair.Parents worry about their children’s safety, health, and future, as these conditions hinder education and development.
Despite these challenges, many families display remarkable resilience and hope through Jesus Christ,
and strive to create a better future for their children. However, they urgently need support to break free from the cycle of poverty and improve their living conditions.
